Nestled on the edge of the North York Moors National Park lies a scenic market town, which has previously won the Best Market Town at the Great British High Street Awards.

The Feathers Hotel have combined the humble Yorkshire pudding with a sandwich to create the 'Pudwich'.

The pub serves up their Roast 'Farm-to-Fork' Helmsley Beef & Yorkshire 'Pudwich' with pan gravy, horseradish cream, fat chips, and watercress.

Customers raved about the creation on TripAdviso r - with the pub also winning the site's Travellers' Choice Award.

One person said: "I had the pudwich, a Yorkshire pudding and beef sandwich, it was incredible. All our meals were amazing."

Another said: "Three of us chose the Roast Beef Pudwich, wonderful melt in the mouth roast beef sandwiched between two Yorkshire puddings and served with twice cooked chips and a wine gravy, heaven."

Feathers also serve up seasonal dishes such as Slow Braised Ox Cheek with burnt onion purée, fondant potato, roasted carrot, caramelised shallot, sugar snaps, and beef stock jus; Oyster Mushroom & Toasted Pine Nut Gnocchi, crème fraîche, toasted hazelnut pesto dressing, and pea shoots; and Sticky Toffee Pudding, caramel sauce, Ryeburn cinder toffee ice cream, caramel popcorn.

The town is also packed with historical features, such as the ruins of Helmsley Castle .

Standing for over 900 years, Helmsley Castle had many uses over the centuries - from a medieval fortress to a grand Tudor mansion.

Sat beneath the castle's ruins is the Helmsley Walled Garden .

Built in 1758 to provide fruit and vegetables for the Feversham family, World War One saw an end to the garden's operations.

In 1994 Alice Ticehurst, a local nurse, developed the garden into a space where people could visit to benefit from therapeutic horticulture.

Or venture over to Rievaulx Abbey to explore the area's relationship with the church.

Founded in the 12th century, Rievaulx was the first Cistercian abbey established in the north of England.

For an afternoon tipple, the Helmsley Brewing Co offers tours around the town's artisan brewery.

Or take a seat in the beer garden and try some of their home brewed beer, including the Yorkshire Legend bitter, Helmsley Honey, and the Howardian Gold.

And when it's time for a bite, Helmsley has a wealth of top rated eateries.

La Trattoria serves classic and Neapolitan pizzas, with toppings including Quattro Stagioni, Carne, L'Atomica, and Tropicale.

But if pizza isn't tickling your fancy, they also offer dishes such as Seabream Acqua Pazza, Porchetta (Rolled pork belly stuffed with smoked bacon, breadcrumbs, raisins, pine nuts, herbs), and Basil pesto, pine nuts, parmesan with pappardelle.

For light bites, The Cocoa Tree offers homemade quiches, toasties, jacket potatoes, and cakes.

How to get there

You can catch a train from King's Cross to York, before taking a bus directly to Helmsley.
