Most introductory theatre textbooks are written for theatre majors and assume the student already has a considerable amount of knowledge on the subject. Still, such textbooks may be counterproductive, because they reference several works that may be unfamiliar to students with limited exposure to theatre. Theatre every bit Human Action: An Introduction to Theatre Arts, Second Edition is designed for the college student who may exist unacquainted with many plays and has seen a limited number of theatre productions. Focusing primarily on four plays, this textbook aims to inform the student well-nigh theatre arts, stimulate interest in the art class, lead to disquisitional thinking about theatre, and ready the pupil to be a more than informed and critical theatregoer.

In addition to looking at both the theoretical and practical aspects of theatre arts—from the nature of theatre and drama to how it reflects society—the author likewise explains the processes that playwrights, actors, designers, directors, producers, and critics become through. The 4 plays central to this volume are the tragedy Macbeth, the landmark African American drama A Raisin in the Dominicus, the contemporary rock musical Rent, and—new to this edition—the American comedy classic You lot Can't Take It with You. Review:

Hischak lays out very clearly the aims of the text in the introduction and meets them all past the finish. The utilise of the four featured plays provides a prissy framing devise for the text as a whole and provides the reader with continuity while reinforcing the details of those particular stories. This a well-organized, like shooting fish in a barrel-to-follow, and engaging book. (Patricia Downey, University of S Dakota)

I adore this volume for its comprehensive nature and its demonstration of the reasons how and why theatre is collaborative. Theatre as Human being Action has a logical progression of ideas, provides the reader with an affluence of photos, and is an easy read regardless of one'southward familiarity with the subject matter. (Laurel Whitsett, The Academy of Texas at Arlington)
